Friends,
I'm feeling a bit duped here. Bought what seems to be a 22LR nice rifle to get some affordable range time while we wait out the ammo shortages. BUT didn't know that S&W (or anyone aftermarket) stopped making magazines for it.\
I know that the costs of the ammo metals are up and scarce. But, the M&P 15-22 magazines are very low-tech, super simple molded plastic. What is the hold up? I'm starting to wish I bought a Ruger or HK 22LR instead. Ruger 22LR mags are available everywhere.
Anyway, holding out a little longer before switching to another 22LR rifle with available magazines. Very disappointed in S&W. Please share any news about this if you have it.
Thanks & Safe Shooting. - T
i just called S&W customer support. The lady on the phone said that they are selling so many of the 15-22 rifles that every magazine they make are going on the new rifles. When they catch up (or rifle sales slow), they are again offer the magazines for individual sales. It looks like they are not willing to increase the production of the magazines during this demand. As long as the 15-22 rifles are being sold at this rate, then our extra mags will not be available.

Did they say every magazine they make, or every magazine they get? I am not sure that S&W makes the magazines. They might, or it may be contracted out. The packaging says made in USA.

I really can think of no other reason for the fake 25 round magazines to exist other than that the mall ninjas think it looks cooler than the short 10 round mags.
Don't mean to get in the way of you judging things you don't understand, but since the spring on the full-length mag doesn't need fully compress for 10 rounds, my kid's able to load it easier than the shorter mags. But forgetting that, if I had to come up with other reasons off the top of my head? Well...you can't use a 10rd magazine as a shooting rest. And the longer cartridge sticks out of a pocket, making it easier to grab for reload. Not to mention the longer mag's curve makes it easier to make sure it's oriented in the right direction by touch alone. It doesn't get lost in a range bag as easy.

But hey, don't let me stop you from leaning hard on your mall ninja stereotypes. 😘

OK, I did qualify that I could think of no other reason, but did not say that all long 10 round magazine users were mall ninjas. I just said the mall ninjas think they look cooler. Thanks for educating me on other possible reasons that a non-mall ninja could have for liking them.

Anytime! And don't get me wrong...my kid absolutely thinks they look cooler too. She's like a mini-mall ninja. 😃

Shawn, thanks for calling them.

However, this is a disappointing reply. "Thanks for buying our rifle. Now that we have your money - see ya!" When the patent expires on the magazine, they are leaving a whole five miles wide for competitors to fill the gapping customer service void S&W is leaving open.

Hey MagPul, are ya listening?
