Green dot circle for pistol – it worked for me

I have tried to use several normal red dot sights for my pistol but with my astigmatism I could not use them. I ordered a Holosum green dot circle recently, put it on my new M&P, it works great for me. No astigmatism distortion at all. With this sight, I no longer have a distortion at 25 yard shooting where the 6” target is covered up by the front sight. The circle dot is not conducive to making half dollar holes in targets but it works great for 1” to 2” poa to poi.

Older guys like me have trouble with their eye sight not being what it once was and neither are our hands as steady as they once were when firing a pistol, but all things considered, this green dot circle is a real game changer for me in my old age.

They are a bit expensive, and some may not want to take the risk if it does not work for them, but if you are an older shooter it may very well work for you and help you to not be so frustrated at the range that old age often brings.

I had bought a Holosun 507C green dot to try to get used to the optics. My eye sight isn't bad know and I'm still much faster with the iron sights but I too have astigmatism and figure the day is coming when they get bad enough they give me a problem. I really like the Holosun on my M&P 40 with the 5 inch barrel it's a Pro Series that come with co witnessing sites and an optic cut out with plates. I don't think I'll be adding an optic to any of my carry pistols at this time though.

I also use a holographic reflex sight, but still have the distortion I experience with red dot sights. It's due to astigmatism and a growing cataract. With the projected holograph reticle I find aiming easier than with the single dot, which I perceive as a small distorted star.

In either case, I still find it faster to pickup and aim with iron sights on a pistol. I do prefer optical sights on an AR rifle platform.

I agree the iron sights have always been faster for me as well, but as things have become what they are in the country, I have spent a lot of time training for 75’ and beyond head shorts in emergency situations in public places like restaurants. In my area, I am much less likely to be mugged in our grocery store parking lot than the possibility of having to defend my family in a public place from some crazed nut job.

I always thought the red dot on pistols was a gimmick until I aged and the iron sight covered up the head target by the front sight at 75’. But the green dot 32 moa circle has eliminated that aging problem a great deal.
