I just posted this on another forum and I thought you folks might find it interesting.
This is a model 13, 3" round butt, .357. The last revolver the FBI issued to agents before they switched to auto loaders. They carried the "FBI" load which was a .38 Special +P, 158 grn hp, gas checked round.
I just googled "The FBI load". Lot of info on the web. Very impressive round or as one old time retired cop said, "You only needed one per customer" to settle a situation.
Quite a few years ago I read that some manufactures used a "gas checked" bullet so as to not lead up the bores. In my hand loading days, I used gas checks on all my high speed lead loads. ( I just looked up the Buffalo Bores load and they do use gas check bullets in their “gas-checked 158-grain LSWCHP Heavy load”)
That Model 13 I bought several years ago came close to maxing out my home equity loan. There are not many around since Janet Reno (former ultra liberal AG) made the Bureau destroy them when the agents turned them in. I think I read somewhere that even an agent that was retiring could not keep one. I may be wrong but this is probably close to what actually happened.
If you can add any more information or find some errors, please let me know.
