Even though the J frame is the smallest sized revolver that S&W makes, it is probably the most versatile. It has had an incredible amount of variation over the years, more than any other frame size. To start with you have 3 frame variations to choose from. There is the exposed hammer, shrouded hammer and internal hammer. You have multiple frame material to choose from, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloy and Scandium alloy. Both fixed and adjustable sights can be had and barrel lengths have ranged from just under 2 inches, all the way up to 5 inches in the case of some model 60’s. In between you’ll find 2.25”, 3”, 3.5“ and 4” barrels that I can think of offhand. Caliber options over the years have been numerous. Again, offhand I can think of 22, 22 magnum, 32 caliber, 32 H&R Magnum, 38 S&W, 38 Special, 9mm and 357 magnum. I don’t think any other frame size has been produced with that much variety.
