Help date and value my s&w mod 10-5 snub nose

I recently inherited my grandfather's 38 snub nose Smith & wesson.. it has a pearl handle.. mod 10-5 .. c588419 ..68085 .. I'm going to take pics and come back to post them.. thank you for any info you may have

Thanks for the pictures. Here's what I see: The grips are faux pearls by Jay Scott. The grip adapter is an early Mershon that was later bought out by Pachmayr. These were very popular by police for their backup guns. It is a round butt version of the Model 10 and the original grips would have looked like these from my 1949 M&P:

To give a little background on the .38 Military & Police snub, S&W didn't produce a .38 snubby (2" barrel) until the mid 1930's. Not many were made before WWII. After the war, they began to make them in a square butt configuration which was the predominant butt frame since around 1905. They made them in a long-throw action up until 1948 when they introduced the short-throw action like on your GF's gun. The picture below shows a .38 M&P snub with a square butt from 1948 (upper) and a short-throw action, round butt, from 1949 (lower). Notice the shape of the hammers. That is a quick way to tell the age of an M&P whether snub or long barrel.
