I'd have thought that S&W would want to compete with Ruger with modern SA revolvers, but no. Even the Italians have figured out how to take a successful whack at SA's. Jeez S&W even went after the burgeoning 1911 market!

Anyone have insider or published info on the subject?

The Italians are making repros of their single actions and Colts. Most likely they have the tooling and can do it for less. Smith Made a run of Model 3 about 20 years ago but I believe they were sub contracted out. I collect single actions. Some of mine

Guess Schofield dosen't count as top break? Answer is i believe as with many things...MONEY! Back in the day Colt ruled w/single actions. Remington played their part. Smith made profits from their lines so with business plans over time (time is $$$$) chose not to gear up for SA's. Me thinks the glory days for Smith & Colt are long past. S&W is grabbing at straws with newbies. Colt brought SA's back because of renewed interest/demand (that = $$$). Italians got on board with CAS & nostalgia. As with all business all bout $$$'s...quality and craftsmanship is archic...and so it goes.

Business decision based on anticipated return-on-investment and opportunity cost. Same as any other.

Not always, many times just the competition aspect is enough though the MBA's are now the tail that wags the dog.

Never heard of burger, automobile, gas wars? :)
You asked a question. I gave you the short answer based on my education and experience. If you don’t like it. Wait for the answer you do like. It all costs the same. Free.

1av8r I've not been looking to argue with you at all but if you read your posts I felt that they were all colored as a challenge. Mea Culpa if I was wrong.

As far as running businesses goes, B-I-G business works on a completely different scale than us mere humans do. Does an automobile maker know a new model will sell after investing many millions on it? No they do not, ROI is no Guarantee. When I worked at IBM's development labs we had dog sellers that were tailor made to compete with Compaq, Dell, HP and others and lost a bunch, it was a cost of doing business.

We used to say, "A couple of hundred million here, a couple of hundred million there and pretty soon you're talking REAL money" :)

Again, mea culpa I meant no challenge, I WAS looking for "insider or published info on the subject"

Once double action was developed, I never saw much sense in making any more single action guns, because the DA versions are capable of firing in SA. The Western style SA revolvers have their place and fill the niche well for SAO.
Sigh, unfortunately UR mostly right, SA are a bit more of a niche than DA/SA, but Ruger developed the BIG SA pistols after S&W made the registered magnums as did Freedom Arms and much later the BFR from Magnum Research did also and those certainly are not used in SASS type events.

Gnappi, sorry if you took my first reply as a challenge. It was not my intent. Have a great day.

Egads, I bet we ex-IBMers all have many very similar stories to tell. I knew secretaries that had NO technical training who wound up in upper level management.

The PC company where I worked is gone, come to think of it, the BM part of IBM is gone too!

Gnappi, yes it's history. Work in PC manufacturing as production control & engineering change analyst for years. After experience with young MBA recruits, eyes opened and saw 'light at end of tunnel'. Soon realized was a train coming with me a 'dinosaur' on the tracks. Qualified and took one of packages qualified for. Kindly titled ITO (Individual Transistion Option) directed at dinosaurs as myself. Left with a years pay, retirement & benefits. Started small lawn care business & retired from that 2021. No regrets nor bitterness & life is good. Others may relate to the business methodology wave that pushed the dinosaurs into the tarpit to become fossils...and so it goes
