Why was the tapered barrel found to be less than ideal? With that much barrel and the 45acp cartridge, I wouldn't think heat build up would lead to inaccuracy, especially considering you have to stop to reload every 6 rounds
I do not know but according to this article by Jim Clark, the barrel was not accurate with his loads and too light?

According to the article, the Model 1955 corrected the problems and his reloads were now accurate! I find that hard to believe as the rifling specifications for the Model 1955 and the Model 1950 are identical and the same as specified by the Army for the Model 1917. S&W eventually changed the rifling but I am not sure the exact year, sometime in this century. Supposedly to make it more friendly to cast bullets. But as you can read, Clark and other competitors were happy with the cast bullet performance.

Thank you so much for posting that article! I learned a great deal. I have to admit somewhat ashamedly of my ignorance of both the Models of 1950 and 1955 until coming to this forum. I've been shooting revolvers since the late 70's but have never fired either or for that matter known anyone that had one. A friend briefly had a Model 25 but I never fired it.

Thanks again.

Continuing with the ACP revolver, here is the first target model 45 ACP produced by S&W, the S&W Model 1950. This model also incorporated the new short action lock works.

Prior to this model, if you wanted a target ACP revolver from S&W it was a custom built revolver.

However, there was some small group of dedicated revolver shooters who found the tapered barrel to be less than ideal so 5 years later the S&W Model 1955 was offered to the public.

Basically the same revolver with the exception it had a full diameter barrel.
The two were produced side by side until the Model 1950 was discontinued in 1961. Only 2768 of the Model 1950 were produced and sold.

I couldn’t find a thread where we could post an occasional revolver picture. So... I thought I’d create one. Feel free to add pictures of your wheel gun. I’ll start with Old Trusty. My well worn M19, and one of my most trusted carry pieces. Post up your wheel gun pictures. View attachment 576111

I see a panel with a white circle with a white dash inside of it. All I did was hit reply, so it copied the picture you posted which you can see, but I can't

I'll add one. My homemade snub nose. It started life as a 19-6 4" square butt revolver. I changed the barrel and converted (filed) it to a round butt frame. I also polished the trigger. Since the picture was made, I have replaced the rear sight with one that is the correct length, filling the gap between the sight and the front sight ramp.
