Just getting back into revolvers after about a 25 year hiatus. Recently bought a 686 Plus with the 5" barrel and just love it. Not sure why I ever got away from the .357 or revolvers for that matter.

Sooooo, I'm going to buy another .357 and want to get some ideas.

I've got the 5" so that covers target and hunting/field use so I'm thinking of something with a shorter barrel, something I will occasionally carry. I want to stay with the medium frame size but not sure which barrel I want. I like the 4" but that's not much difference from the 5". I'm thinking the 3" is the way to go. Did I already make my decision here? :D

I remember carrying my Mod. 10 heavy(4") barrel .38 for many years back when that's what you carried. That was easy enough, why not a 3" .357?

Really, I need one of each.

What's your preference?

Sounds like you may have already decided your best path with the 3” barrel. I would throw out another option. I recently picked up a K Frame Model 10 snubby. Perfect for carry and surprisingly accurate for such a short barrel. That said the snubby would be easier to conceal carry but the 3” may have more versatility for you in other ways. I know, why don’t you buy both?
