This creature is walking across the wall to my left as I type this. It's about the size of 2 pinheads, or a small tick, but those are pincer type claws. What is this thing, I've never seen anything like it before?

Re: WTF is this? micro creature ID

I have answered my own question, its a pseudo scorpion. Weird. Totally harmless. Wind chills outside are about 10 below right now, whats it doing here in NH in the middle of January?

We see them outside often here. Never seen one as small as two pinheads, or as big as the two new pinheads in the Whitehouse :ymdevil:
Maybe they hitched a ride on some produce?

Geoff, It's not a scorpion, but a tick. There are several varieties of tick. I was concerned about a deer tick bite that I had gotten this past fall. So I did a little research on ticks. Turns out my tick bite was a Dog Tick ( not a problem in this part of the country), but I also saw a picture of one like that....with pincers. Bob

Oh sure, until a about 800 of them eat your face off while you're sleeping.

Sweet dreams. ;)

Re: WTF is this? micro creature ID

Geoff,

I remember the first time I saw one of those critters.... flipped me out too as it was on the railing of my newborn's crib!.... Was long before the internet info age and I was more then a little concerned.... I had a pal who was an entomology intern at USM so I drove like a madman to his office with it and excitedly asked if my new first born was in any danger.... I'd seen children in Mexico with scorpion stings and it ain't pretty.... he just laughed and told me that these are all around us and common place .....

Since then I enjoy looking at them when they amble through with their weird, pincer waving gate.....

Mostly however I see them in the house during the warmer season and usually near water like the bathroom sink where they stand out against the white surfaces....

That's a new one on me! Perhaps it's so small that I never paid any attention to it. Better believe that I'll be checking out every tiny critter a bit better from now on.
