Hey need help guys. I posted on another forum when I travelled to Iowa last week and got no response off a knife forum. I know here people can help out. I am travelling to NY city next week and want to know if I can carry my Leatherman and a pocket knife around or will I get arrested. Is there a limit on size or design, like locking blade or fixed? Need to know what to pack, thanks. James

I would advise you to check the web for the laws, but I know the blade can't be more than 4 inch's and switchblades and gravity knives are illegal. Basically if it looks like a weapon the city cops will consider it illegal.

I carry a Leatherman on my belt all the time without a problem in the city.

Fixed blade=No, no!! No ref, just smart.
Leatherman, put it on your belt, and no one is going to notice.
Any other type of pocketknife just drop in your pocket, and don't sweat it. Keep the blade under 4", and as long as its not a switchblade/gravity type blade you should be good to go. No ref., just smart. No need to advertise in the big fig!!!

Thanks guys, I was thinking about picking up one of those folding box cutters with the disposable blades. Just in case they say it's not a tool.

Just bring a nice sturdy pocket knife with a blade not longer than 4 inches and you are good to go. The city is not a bad as some people think, be aware of your surroundings and go places where there are a lot of people.

Thanks Hunter, a couple of the guys I work with told me to not leave my tools lying around like we do here. They have had a couple things disappear from the jobsite. When I went to Iowa last week the TSA rummaged through my checked luggage and I thought my knife was gone, I just found it out of place when I got to the hotel. Same on the way home except this time there was toothpaste all over it and my leatherman.

Yes I would agree, people seem to have sticky fingers. The rest of NY, like out east and upstate is a different world. There are farms and small towns with people with good old fashion values. Many of the farm stands just have a box and let you take what you want and leave the money and no one would think of stealing it. It's a shame all of NY gets labeled because of the city.

I have nothing good to say about those TSA people. A waste of our tax dollars, no accountability to anyone. They can do what ever they want to, and they routinely do. Including opening toothpaste and leaving it open. Tell me, did that tube open itself? This kind of stuff happens to too many people for it to all be chance. Thinking about TSA makes my blood boil.
Keeping us all safer my a**.

In my limited NYC experiences a good Swiss Army knife and a small Kershaw is all I ever brought along.

I was born and raised in NYC and MOVED OUT about 35 years ago.To become an LEO in western NY [ yes NYC is not the whole state ] and I am very familiar with the state and NYC laws [ yes they are different ] in NYC they will take any knife with a pocket clip = if the LEO wants to.So stay under 4" blade and dont take it out in public, carry a real small penknife for that,or a SAK = SMALL.You can check online too for NYC and see if they actually list what is legal, seems it changes daily.
