That is a sight for shooting metallic silhouette competition. It is a factory sight. The sight can be adjusted for 4 different shooting distances. Yes that gun has a premium value over a standard Model 686.

It is factory. They did it on .357 and .44 Magnum guns (possibly others???) There is one locally for sale and the LGS wants $750, but its not in as good of condition as the one you posted.

The original Silhouette gun was a Model 29 with a 10 5/8 inch barrel. The front sight is for sighting in for different distances. S&W also made a six inch version Model 29-3 Classic Hunter.

Here's an example of the Classic Hunter (the grips are Herrett. The Hogue S&W logo grips are original for the gun).

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, Jennifer! These guys have already told you more than I know about your gun. Except...it was made on Tuesday, August 22, 1995. :D

I have a similar revolver with the adjustable front sight. Although I used it for PPC, unsuccessfully might I add.

Mine was made in 1989.
