Thank you so much for all of the helpful info posted to date on these revolvers. I am getting some conflicting info locally on the identification and value of this handgun. It was left to me in the will of an old time Alaskan pioneer and I want to give it to my son. I would like to be able to tell him exactly what it is and what it is worth. The barrel is just a bit shy of 5.5 Inches. Thank you in advance for your help. I think I got the important pictures but if you need something else please ask.

I have more pictures avail if needed. 20190902_193539.jpg 20190902_193619.jpg 20190902_201419.jpg 20190902_193657.jpg 20190902_193636.jpg

Howdy and Welcome to the forum. It seems to be 1955-56 shipped (a year prior to number nomenclature). The barrel length is measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle end of the barrel, so I suspect yours is actually 6 1/2".

Thanks for all of the help gentlemen. I obviously came to the right place. I think that it will make a nice gun for my son. Now he will have a better idea what it is and that he needs to take good care of it!
Thanks again for all of the help. M

Congrats, it's a dandy!

The official model name for your .44 is: "44 Target Model of 1950", often referred to as a .44 Hand Ejector 4th change 1950 Target by some collectors.

The closest # to yours, # 143776, in my database has a shipping date 10/8/1955.

The production dates in the SCSW (Standard Catalog of S&W), 'the bible', provides ~ production dates. Not to be confused with shipping dates which always follow and are the only dates that can be finitely confirmed by the factory from the shipping invoices.
