While handing my brand new Sigma to my wife one of us let go to early or grabbed it too late and it fell onto the sight chewing concrete. I do like the stock sights but I'm having a hard time finding out if they are replaceable. On the S&W website it says they are factory installed only. I really don't want to drop a bunch of cash on some fancy aftermarket sights either though. At least it only messed up the sights.

Also...what is a 1 line, 2 line, 3 line, and 4 line front sight and what do the numbers mean (.160, .145 etc.) ? Thanks.

The sizes .160 are the height of the sights. The sights are factory installed only. You need special tools to remove and install them. Just send the slide back to the factory and that way you can send it cheaply.

Like Dave says, it's how tall the overall sight is. I'm not sure what the line # means, unless they have grooves made into them to reduce the sun reflection. Usually the higher the number the finer the lines (like pitch of a thread)

Any shop can put the sights on, or we can help you, if you want to try yourself. S&W presses them in so you need a vise to hold the slide or the special sight remover tool. Normally they come out left to right with a bit of force applied.
S&W doesn't use locktite, but I do when I set them. (Locktite can be removed easily with a bit of localized heat).

I just bought .40 Cal Sigma and purchased some Trijicon Tritium night sights (all 3 dots green) I was not aware that it would be a difficult task but was told at a local gunshop today that I would HAVE TO have it done at a gunsmith. You said that you could help w/ a DIY project. I would love to try this myself...... mainly because I can't afford to have a gunsmith do it. I waould appreciate ANY help you can offer. Thank you!

The main thing to do is buy replacement sights that are for your gun, or more properly that match your dovetail on your slide. Otherwise the slide will need to be machined for the sights you choose.

S&W does not locktite there sights in, but they are pressed it and quite tight. I never done a sigma but, if like their 1911 pistol, you tap them out left to right. Underneath the rear sight, there may be the trigger block parts so be careful that you put the retainer and spring back in with your new sight set.

How I do it (if I don't have a rear sight pusher) is I use a brass punch and strike it smartly from the left and it will move. I place the slide in a good vise, with protection so I don't mar the outsides. I also add filler material between the ways, so as you tighten the slide down in the vise, you don't squish the slide and damage it.
Reverse it to put the new ones back on. Sometimes you will need to file the bottom of the new sight (to make in thinner) to help it slide back on. If it will go in all the way, then once satisfied, I add a drop of #609 Locktite to make sure it stays put.

Take some hoppes or copper solvent and clean up any brass marks on the new sights, if any.
