I'm getting my mom a new S&W 380 EZ and I'm wondering if anyone knows what the reccomendations are for the break-in period. How many rounds? I'm thinking at least 500 rounds break-in period. Does anyone have any further information on this? Please let me know.

500 rounds? That can get real expensive. I am of the opinion that any gun that needs that many rounds to "break-in" is defective. It should work fine out of the box after an initial cleaning and lubrication per the owner's manual

My wife has one now for about 2 years. It ran right out of the box with all types of ammo. It now has about 400 rounds down the barrel and never had a problem.

I've had my .380 EZ for a few years and I doubt that it has had over 500 rounds through it. If you keep your grip HGH AND TIGHT at all times (every second!) it should work just fine.

This stuff about major use break in periods is a bit silly in my book: The longer you use a gun the more likely it is to have "something" break or to need a new "somewhere" spring. I do know that super high priced very tight guns require significant usage for the parts to wear in together properly. The EZ is not in that category.

My opinion from well over 25 of shooting a variety of brands and models from 22lr to 9mm.

As stated above, no break in period should be required on it. It should function correctly out of the box (after initial cleaning and lubrication of course). My wife has had one for about 3 years with approximately 400 rounds thru it with the only issue being a defective magazine which S&W replaced. If a problem develops, contact S&W to send it back in for warranty repairs.
For me , a new pistol needs to function flawlessly for at least 200 rounds in order to be considered a carry weapon. Both of my EZ pistols .380 and 9mm have done that.
My 380EZ has been so reliable that I loaned it to my Brother-in-law to become his carry firearm when he gets his license.
