I have a couple questions about about ruger vaqueros. My elderly uncle bought himself a set.He got a coach gun and a henry golden boy.He plans on getting into this cowboy shooting stuff. But his heart valves are failing and they just stuck him on oxygen. He has to have valve replacement real soon and its risky at his age 70.He sent me pictures of his guns and holsters and stuff and if he makes it through the surgery and a long recooperation. He will be off the oxygen and fairly healthy for a few more years.
But the last time I was talking to him he was saying it took him two years to scratch up enough money to buy all his gear and then his health takes a dump.He said now I cant even scrounge up enough to put some stag grips on my vaqueros. After I got off the phone I got to thinking and decided to go surfing around for stag grips for it.I found one site where a guy makes nice ones with ruger medalions for 150 bucks a set.I went to the ruger site and didnt see any at all.Nor on ebay. Then I get my new shooters catalogue from the sportsmans guide.I find genuine stag grips for 119.97 and 107.97 with the buyers club. They dont have medalions though and I was going to ask can you buy medalions? Or do you have to rob them from old grips. Also it says they fit black hawk and vaquero.I am positive he has new vaqueros and told me they are lighter and I believe he told me smaller.I know nothing about vaqueros and have never handled one the old or new.So my question is are the grips different if I order him a couple sets?
One other question is I was on the phone with a friend out in tennesee. He told me his nieghbor just bought a set of new vaqueros recently and insists they come with two sets of grips. And he got stags with it.Can you get them with stags?Like I said I looked at the ruger site and they didnt list any.My friend may be wrong but is it possible ruger has stags you can buy but you have to special order them or something?
He is a ex autobody man and is very handy with his hands and I am sure he could set the medalions if he even wants them. I plan to suprise him and havent dug around to find out.

Make sure of a few things before buying any stags. One, that the gun is indeed a New Vaquero and not a Old Model Vacquero. Two, determine the gripframe on the gun. The were made with a standard, bisley, and birdshead gripframe in both models. For example, one of my Vaquero's is an Old Model with the full size blackhawk frame and has a birdshead gripframe.

Lastly, (and to add to the confusion) there are many in the Cowboy Action crowd that call a Single Six .32 H&R fixed sighted gun a Vaquerro, as it is similiar in style.

Actually,

Carl made a great suggestion. Patrick does wonderful work and can set a set of Ruger medallions in place in the process...

Here is a picture of my uncles New vaqueros. He isnt to happy with the cheap holsters he bought online in the picture and I guess a distant cousin of mine he knows is making him a set.As you can see they are not single sixes or biseleys or birds head style.
Carl I went to the site you sent me a link to and I am going to give that guy a call. From all the surfing I did his prices are extremely reasonsable. The pics he has of his grips show that they also look more finished than the ones I have seen in other sites they want 250 a set for.Judging from his site he is into the cowboy shooting stuff himself.Making the grips it looks like he could tell me if the old and new vaqueros use the same grips. Now I have to dig around with my uncle and see if he wants the medalions or plain with out letting him know I am getting a couple sets.I want to have a package arrive at his place and when he opens it discover the new stag grips. He has a very good chance of not making it through the surgery because of his age and previous by pass. I know its working on him and the joy of getting the grips would take his mind away from the surgery.
The ones at sportsmans guide are sanded and buffed etc but the antler they use looks like unchoice pieces compared this guys work. Thanks all of you for replying and good imformation this site is full of.

Onenut58, Those are the New Vaquero's the hammer shape is a giveaway. Good luck with your Stag grips I don't personally know anyone who makes them, but there are several makers out there.

If your Uncle is unhappy with his holsters I can reccomend a fantasitc period leather smith. Rick Bachman www.oldwestreproductions.com I'm not into CAS, but do like period leather & Ricks are some of the best. As with all good artists he is not cheap. Thanks Frank & good for you trying to make your Uncle's life a little better!

First of all, let me say that I'm sorry to hear about your uncle and I hope he makes a complete recovery.

For top quality leather gear, contact El Paso Saddlery-

If those are New Vaqueros, and they look like it from the hammers, They use the Ruger XR3 grip frame, while the original Vaqueros used the XR3RED (redesigned) grip frame which is larger.

Grashorns stocks are beautiful!
