Once in a very blue moon, I have to leave my 'pew pew' in my vehicle.

So, I keep a lock box with a cable attachment for such rare occasions to store it in.

Could it be stolen?

Sure, if the thief has the time and tools, otherwise no.

Here in Texas, with a rare few businesses that post (a proper 30.06 sign - which is a dis-allowance to carry in their business) it's quite rare one can't CC almost everywhere and even then such a misdemeanor as carrying in a business that doesn't allow it and then getting caught is not much of a problem...low dollar fine.

Since I don't break the law, if I want to eat in a restaurant/business and they've a posted 30.06 sign...I just go elsewhere. Plus, I have no interest in supporting a gun free zone bidness.

One of our bigger chain stores that sells jewelry posts a 30.06 sign in all their stores...yeah, like I'm going into a jewelry store (often robbed) that wants me disarmed because us law abiding gun carriers are to be feared. What stupidity!

Then we have places that post signs that say words to the effect: Guns are welcome here! If the need to shoot arrives please use judicious thinking and great aim...or words to that effect!

Thanks, good points. Yeah, considering it only happened once where I was out of town (in a rural area in a long driveway near not many people), I don't think it would be something normative for me. Based on the feedback here about risks such as theft, I don't plan to do it unless absolutely have to. I do have a steel pistol lockbox with cable as you are saying, and will bring this if traveling with the pistol, just in case.

In those cases where you absolutely MUST leave it in your unattended car for extended periods, I like the suggestion others have made. Take the slide off and take some critical part (frame. slide, barrel) with you. Shouldn't take more than a minute to unload it and take the slide off.

Yes, I think that is a good suggestion.

Hi, occasionally when traveling to another person's house overnight, in the future I may have one of my 9 mm pistols in my car for concealed carry. Just got my license. But, I may not be able to bring it in the house nor want to ask permission to do so.

In the winter, like now, where the temperatures are just above and below freezing most nights, is it safe to leave my guns in the car? I know people say it's probably fine, but I also want to take care of them. Also, it would probably be occasional.Does this produce wear and tear on them? We are talking 20 degrees at the lowest, but usually more like 30 degrees to 40 degrees. Tonight it is maybe 35.

Edit: If I were to do so I would bring my steel pistol lockbox with cable to attach to car inside, hidden.
Leaving any firearm unattended in a vehicle is always a bad idea!!!

Chuck Taylor wrote an article several years ago about his 9MM Glock 17. He froze it in ice for an extended period of time, fully loaded. Took it out, knocked off the ice and it shot fine.
You can't do anything, short of a nuclear bomb to hurt a Glock.

I have read there are other models/brands that have done as well. But, some of them are more expensive too. I did want an utterly reliable 9 mm, that would last a while and in adverse conditions potentially. Hence, a Glock 19. This is also why I got a Ruger Mark IV. Not only is the one I got very nice looking, and I needed a .22 LR pistol, they too are known to last for many tens of thousands of rounds.

Friends keep there gen 2-3 Glock’s in temp extremes cold and hot all have said the same thing watch the lube on the contact points on slide & extractor cold it gums and heat runs off and the 1 thing they agree on is brand not to use involves an amphibian that hops, normal temps works fine for them but extreme heat or cold they don’t like. 1 works on the Canadian border he has the most problem finding a lube he likes his issue lube turns hard as a brick, also carries a .454 Casull in a shoulder holster.

No cold weather issues.....just issues with 2 legged varmints! I never leave a firearm in my vehicle! Just Me! 🇺🇲 🤠
I haven't been generally, after this thread. Also, i only did once or twice total.

How do we handle going to the gym or something though? As in, not bringing a gun into to work out.

Some on here agree for a short period like 45 minutes it may be okay?

Fair enough. What do you say though to the variety of people who leave a gun in their car? For example, some people have to do so when going into a job for the day, a courtroom, etc etc. I agree with your risk points, but I'm not sure everyone agrees that the answer is to never have a gun in your car. It seems as if many people do. According to my state law, from what I can tell, you are able to have a loaded gun in the car if you have a concealed carry permit, but not if you don't. It doesn't say anything about if you leave the car.
Some articles I found:
How Do You Leave Firearms In The Car Responsibly? - USA Carry
PA Rules for Transporting/Carrying Firearms | FICG (firearmsindustryconsultinggroup.com)
I say they are fools!!!!!!!

Thanks, as far as unattended, are you saying with a concealed carry license you can't have a gun locked up in a secure lockbox inside? I'm sure that depends on the state, but is that really the law everywhere?
Not in Tennessee. You can lock up a handgun in your car even on school grounds - there are restrictions. I read up on the law anytime I am going near a school and place that sells alcohol.
