Welcome to the forum.

Take a NRA Basic Pistol class from a good instructor that has coaching skills. They will help get you started with safety and marksmanship.

If it's a 9mm Luger pistol, you use 9mm Luger (or 9mm Parablelum or 9x19m ) ammunition. Practice with standard velocity full metal jacket ammunition.

Here's an overview;

Self defense ammunition is often higher velocity (+P) and sometimes uses different hollow point bullet profiles. Each company markets their own version of this.

I urge you not to embark on this alone without the education and training you need to be safe.

In today's environment, IF you can even FOND any 9mm, buy it regardless. Practice and adjust hold/aim points accordingly.
