Is there such a thing as a semi auto with a polymer slide? If not, why not?

Seems to me that with the proper springs, and the proper metal inserts for the rails, that such a thing should be possible with today's materials--at least for some of the tamer cartridges.

School me about why not...

I'm certainly no expert, but I think that slide mass/weight plays a pretty big role in proper functioning.

A poly slide just wouldn't have the mass to function well, no matter what you did with the springs (maybe for a 22LR it would work).

I think any engagement/bearing surfaces (lug recesses and whatnot) that interact with the barrel would get destroyed in the first shot unless they were reinforced with steel - and at that point, I'm not even sure if that would work.
