Hello all , looking at smiths on line and came across a nickel 586 4” with a goal stamp saying 1983 on one side and #97 of 100 on the other side , any clues on this pistol or information about stamping? Any value Or worth less because of stamp on it ? Thanks

I don’t know much about the extra stampings , numbers & their meanings. The hammer and trigger looked like a personal choice to re- blue ( case - color the natural look is missing.)
Has there been a lot of stocks with that cut out on the right side? That is something new to me. A little personal customization ? Or am I exaggerating ?
May have a re - nickel there too.

It was probably an award, or promotional, revolver for whatever group is represented by GOAL. During the 1980s and the introduction of the L-frame (models 581, 586, 681, 686), S&W did a bunch of these type revolvers. S&W would create custom side plates for the various groups giving them away. I'm sure it means something to a GOAL member. I don't know if S&W still does this, or not. My father gave me a Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Association 586 when I graduated from the police academy many years ago.

I think you are a little out of touch with current pricing. Tough to find any 586 for under $700 these days
A brand new 686 will run you $900 these days and a 586 is more like $1000

Those are typical of presentation stocks from the early 80's. Curt360 has a PA State Police commemorative model 19 with the same style stocks

Thanks for all the responses, it looks to me like in really good shape, asking price is $900 or best offer. I’m also looking at a nickel 44spl hand ejector 2nd model from around 1929 same price, add states possible renickel , too many guns never enough money lol !

I really like the 586-686 revolvers and I think that in today’s market $900 is a fair price. However if it is in similar condition (even refinished) for the same money I would get the .44 special.

We all have irrational preferences. But, I would favor the Goal 586 over a refinished 44 special. Just me.

I don’t consider personal preferences as irrational but both revolvers would be good acquisitions.
