I just inherited a chrome S&W 38 Special CTG. Serial number on handle is V23317 and the same appears on the cylinder. 71993 appears on the frame under the forcing cone and on the right side, "MADE IN THE USE' is stamped.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You have a World War II Victory revolver AKA the 38 M&P. S&W made about a million of them during World War II. Your gun has been refinished in either nickel or Chrome and on the aftermarket. These guns are not worth very much but are good Shooters when they're in good condition. You can shoot just about any pressure ammo in it without problem.

Welcome to the forum. As Wiregrassguy said, you have a refinished Victory revolver made during WW2. Those may be the original grips for that gun, or at least are the correct style. As far as a set of aftermarket grips, you would need Square Butt K Frame grips. Your revolver is the same size as a S&W model 10 revolver
