Well I bit the bullet so to speak and got me a new AR-15. Due to the rush on Ar's here in Va. I was unable to find the S&W AR-15 I originally wanted but I did manage to snag a DPMS Panther so I'm happy with that... Unfortunately it's still under lock and key at the local gun emporium due to the fact that I need to get an address change on my drivers license. ( We moved across the state about 5 weeks ago). The DMV's in Va. have finally opened up so I arrived at the local DMV only to discover 200+ people in the parking lot and not a place to park. So tomorrow I will go back 2 hrs. before opening and hope I'm the Gov's. first victim. They are supposed to be open from 9am. to 4:30pm but have been closing early due to the overload of customers. On line address change is not available on line.
As to the rest, it's helpful to remember that criminals acquiring firearms without background checks never have to wait on the DMV or other Virginia bureaucracy.
congratulations!! AR's are a hoot to shoot .. I dont own one and probably never will but I have shot the platform a ton and they are just fun for fun!!
Well the plot thickens...Went to the local DMV office very early so as to be at the front of the line...Got there at 7:30 AM and there were already 50+ in front of me. After waiting in line for about 45 mins. I overheard 2 folks talking. Found out this was a field office that only takes care of tag and title! They do not handle any Drivers Lic. or address change! So now it's back to square -1. Went on line and the main office/full service in Fredericksburg is not making any appointments until after July! At this point I guess I'll see if I can get a refund on the rifle and just wait for the wheels of a screwed up system to grind on...Did I fail to mention that I hate the Government...
Activeshooter is dead on. If its reserved, paid for or in some other way bound to you ... wait it out if its something you want. The frenzy is reaching a fever pitch and will only get worse and you may not be able to just find another when you are ready. Let him hold it and just work through the DMV stuff.
You would think they would have squared away DMV by now. If this is the new normal then get working on it. My wife has wanted to schedule her MC permit test for some 3 months ... of course .. its not an emergency and we can certainly wait but .... pretty easy for all those government institutions to just fold up aint it. 18 managers for every working employee and they cant come to a way to so anything .. amazing
WOO HOO! Picked up the AR today. After about 4 hrs. on hold and getting cut off 3 times from the DMV I finally got thru and got my ID and new address fixed! Since this DPMS is my first AR I'm taking it slow. Reading the owners manual tonight and it will get a good cleaning tomorrow. Opinions...Is it a good idea to run it "wet" on break in or just oil as directed in the manual. Taking it apart for cleaning I'm sure will have it's challenges, but I'll take my time. It's gonna be a good 4th.
For now I'll leave it just as it came from the factory. Learning how to disassemble and reassemble for general cleaning. This is a whole new platform for me so I'm in a new learning curve. Taking it slow and easy for now. Hope to get to the range next Monday.
In reading the owners manual DPMS states to use CLAW oil???I have been using Hopes solvent to clean and Mobile-1 5W-30 or Lucas gun oil for years with great results. Is this something I need to get or should I just keep using what I have been using. Don't want to screw this thing up.
Well I took some quality time and read thru the owners manual several times. Thus armed with this new knowledge I proceeded to take my new AR apart for cleaning. Everything went well until it was time to remove the bolt head assy. the manual said to rotate the cam pin 1/4 turn and lift it out of the bolt carrier...It would turn but it would not come out...Long story short I cleaned it best as I could cleaned and oiled everything I could touch and see. I'm hoping the cam pin will loosen up after the first range session. Any suggestions???
Oh and to answer one of your first questions. Nothing about the AR makes it need to be run wet. Could actually make it run poorly. Stick with the manual.
Closest range that will take me is 1 hr. from my house...So tomorrow or Monday. I also need to give my Mini-14 some exercise.
