In a trade I got a S&W .38 Spl. that has a date (8-11-43) and name followed bp JP hand etched under the grip. It has MOD. 60 on it and an S under the barrel. There is a 5 digit SN? on it in a few places beginning with805** (no letter) and on bottom of butt is R408**. I'm attaching photos of numbers etc. that I hope will help. The grip on it looks like an old replacement rubber one. It seems mechanically sound but I have not fired it yet.
Thanks for any help. Beige Metal Metal Auto part Alloy wheel Revolver Rim Wheel Technology Firearm Gun Revolver Trigger Starting pistol

R408XX would be the serial, dating it to the early '70s
R30001 - R99999 is 1970 to 1973

The R408xx serial Number according to the SCSW puts it in the 1970 to 1973 time period.

Thanks, I'm assuming the date hand etched under the grip in the guys birth date for ID purposes. The JP behind the name leads me to think he might have been a Justice of the Peace. Doing more research on tha angle.
Thanks again for the help.
