A friend of mine inherited a Smith Model 36. The serial number on the bottom of the grip frame dates it to about 1968. On the crane/yoke it's stamped "00187" (w/o the quotes, lol). The same number is also stamped at the base of the left side of the grip frame. Any ideas as to what that number might represent? I was thinking it may be some kind of production number or whatever. Thanx for any help.

It's an assembly number used to keep fitted parts together during manufacturing.
Thanx. I had a feeling it was sumpin' to with assembly/manufacturing but wasn't sure.
