I have an old smith on the left side is a stamped elephant and the medallion in the grip is an elephant on the barrel it says 38 special and us service ctg 4 1/2 -5 in pinned barrel 4 screw side plate with the serial number on the butt # 161091 The Finnish seams to be a gray parkerize, can anyone give me a date of manufacture?

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Good lord! Please post pictures. S&W's never had elephants engraved on their guns. Also, what caliber is it? S&W used the same serial numbers for different models so we need to know what caliber the gun is chambered for. On hand ejectors, it is stamped on the barrel as, for example, ".38 S&W Special CTG."

If your .38 M&P has a serial number on the butt of 161091, it was made in 1909 to 1910. S&W didn't parkerize their guns in that era. So, it may have been refinished. That's why we need pictures.
