I've noticed that the new SS S & W's I've purchased in the last 2-3 years do look "used". I asked a salesman to show me a M617. He took the display model out of the showcase and it looked "used", I called it "dirty". I mentioned it to him and asked if he could see if there were anymore in stock I could see. He went into the stockroom and brought back 2 more, new in their boxes and guess what...they looked "used..."dirty" too. What's up with that S & W?

The date should be on the blue plastic case end label right below the model number, written with no dashes like this:
060815, which is June 8, 2015.

Injunbro, I have a 686-6 with fired cartridge envelope date in 2009, and another dash 6 with the 2015 date I posted above, and dash 6 is the current revision of the 686

Interesting, according to my SCSW 3rd edition 686-5's ended in 2000 & 686-7 started in 2002. I suppose some could have sat on shelves before shipping or 686-7 was a special run & the 686-6's actually continued after 2002?

One of my 686-6's shows a box date of 20 June 2015...I bought it 8 July '15. My other 686-6 is out of town right now so I don't know the box date but I bought it new 15 Feb 2009.

Serial nmbers CYH and CLZ respectively.

(Great minds huh, Jonesy) :)

The 686-7 was a special Perfomance Center run chambered in 38 Super

My blue case is marked U4U419. It was delivered on or about May 8. 2019. I got an e-mail reply from SW Level 1 stating " Your firearm was produced 4/9/2009. " I called the firearm dealer and asked about the date S&W sent me and they had no clue about being in stock for 10 years. If the date on blue case is accurate I'll leave it at that.

I sent my old M-67 in for service. While they did a nice job.......even refinished it with a brushed finish for free! But, when I got it back....it was covered with oil and dirt! I cleanned it off, and I got to say.....NICE JOB S&W!!!!! It looks like new gun, and they replaced a bunch of parts too. The 'Lifetime Waranty' covered it all!!!!! ;) Bob

My 2.5 inch 686 serial number starts with CML. Test fire date on the envelope is 05-29-2009. Your serial prefix DLB would be after mine you would think, but they reservered certain blocks for certain models and prefixes weren't always used in order
