Here's the thing...
I have come into possession of another 58... never liked the things, it's the fixed sights I guess. They just find me. :D
This one has some use on it, even a story... the story is an acquaintance of mine bought in new back in the 60's to keep in his truck during his 10 year stint as a long haul truck driver. According to him, finding .41 magnum ammo was a hassle so he had a 'smith someplace or other (he cant remember where) convert it to .44 Magnum.

My dilemma, such as it is..., is what am I to do with it ? I could use it as a 'beater' to take the strain of my nice 29's... but I don't typically carry a nice 29 in harsh environments. (thats 1911 territory ;) )
I could use it as a base gun for a wonderful belly gun, similar to the one Doc44 posted... complete with a front sight I could see.
I could just save my cash and use it for trade bait...

What do you think ? :?

If it was mine and I could find the right gunsmith would shorten the barrel to just in front of the Ejector, round butt it put some nice retro stocks on and have a real nice carry .44.

You could do most of it yourself hardest part is getting the front sight back on properly. Trading it off is too easy.

Hell, the stocks aren't even correct Don. It's amazing what some folks will do to a perfectly good .41.

I vote for trade bait.

Thanks for the ideas and comments so far... keep them coming.

Cush, The guy that had it before me was a giant, he had a hand like a bunch of bananas'... it came with a set of diamond targets.

I like the suggestion of using it for a woods carry gun. It's just about perfect with the fixed sights and 4" barrel. A .44 Magnum makes a hell-of-a-woods carry gun. ;) You might want to put a Big Dot front sight on it.

On a similar note......I took my 4" M-10 HB, and had it D&T'd to mount a red dot scope for target/bowling pin/'yote hunting. I didn't use it much after a friend, that I used to shoot with, died. I removed the red dot and scope base, and now, use it as a woods/PD carry gun. It's only .38 spl., but it's a shooter that I like. (Don't have to use the 98% M-66 for carry. ;) )

It's a gun that I don't have to baby, like my old M-36 CCW. Those 2 .38's, plus my M-17, are my shooters. The rest can stay in the safe, in great condition.

BUT, you could just sell it to me,(for a reasonable price) for another shooter, and get whatever you really want. I always wanted a .44Mag shooter. ;) Bob

Hard call.....keeper for whatever 'old buddy' value....
or swap it off on something you prefer more...

would you use it as something other than an Albatross memory piece? I have a couple of those myself. Bittersweet, and still can't decide after all these years.

Even if the story comes with it, is it worth any more/any less than 'just another oddball revolver'?

Does the memory you carry mean keeping the revolver? I can't answer. I am looking for a 29 shooter/truck gun.

I think Bob is onto something here Don. A nice big dot by XS sights might be just the ticket. Plus, you could sell me the targets that came with it and that would help finance the sights... ;)

OH MY GAWD..... There's a special place in hell awaiting you both.....

Donny, If you're serious about swapping, bring that bad boy on down to my house and we'll open up some boxes..... bet we can find something you can't live without....

We'll save this poor beauty from the clutches of heathens such as Cush and Bob....

I always like the idea of fixed sights... and prefer them on my bottom feeders, but... I cant see the darn things on a S&W revolver... at least not well enough to inspire confidence. The big dot front seems a tad extreme, but I don't think it would merit a 'SPECIAL' place in hell...

Ignore all those other comments and sell it to me for a bear/mountain lion gun. That and a can of pepper spray would make me feel better. :)

I'd use it as a woods carry gun you won't feel bad about blue wear on that one.

If you don't want to spend the money on a big dot XS sight, you could do what I did. I "dolled up" the front sights on both the M-36 and the M-10 by painting them with some Revlon Red nail polish. It makes the sights easier to pick-up, and is pretty tough stuff!!! I renew about once/year.

The sight on the M-36 is too small, anyway, so I mostly point shoot with it. The standard version of a Big Dot wwould be just about perfect.....but, being pecunias (cheap), I don't need to spend money on a shooter.

'course in your case, a Big Dot would be perfect!!! (Much bigger gun) Don't pay any attention to Drew.......he gets kinda cranky sometimes!! happyroller nvonjvila nfiofnp Bob
