@tomjimmy00 mentioned I might post pictures of a non S&W rifle. I got this after my parents died. My dad purchased it new for $18. Stamped General Motors 11 41 on the barrel. Love the gun!

1943 National Postal Meter. Got a super deal on it from a friend who was selling off some of his Grandfathers guns. Mostly original except the Bayonet lug. Most M1 Carbines that had bayonet lugs were arsenal updates after 1945 and later. Bayonet lugs weren't seen until late war (1945). Even with that the value is still high compared to what they used to go for. I'm no M1 Carbine expert but you can pick up a lot of info on CMP Forums.

Oh that's hurts that he was selling such a great gun of his grandfather's! Great buy for you!
