I have heard of reliability problems with the full length guiderods, but for me its the simple fact I don't want to have to carry around a tool or paperclip so I can take it apart to clean it. With the Kimber's and others like it, you need the little takedown pin or a paperclip to dismantle, with the SA's you need the hex- wrench. The first thing I did when I got my Loaded 1911A1 was to replace the guiderod with the standard colt style, just like the USGI comes with.
