Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! All I can tell you is it is not an S&W handgun but it is chambered for the .38 S&W cartridge.

IF it's an H&R, it is likely a modern gun (after 1899) because it has a caliber stamp. IIRC H&R did that to indicate it was safe to shoot smokeless powder cartridges.
