Barrel is 3 1/4 inches long, length of barrel and cylinder is 4 1/2 inches. Gun is blued and has rifling in barrel. Top of barrel printed to best of my eyesight using magnifying glass: SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA PATD JAN 17&24.65 JULY 11.65 AUG 24.69 JAN 19 1876 REISSUE JULY 25 1871. Serial number on base of grip 17135. Inside diameter of barrel about 3/8 inch. Do not have any 38 Ammo to see how it fits.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! S&W made the centerfire single actions in both .32 and .38 caliber. I believe yours is a .38 based on the cylinder length. It appears to be a .38 Single Action, 2nd Model from 1878. Lift up the barrel latch and post the serial number you find there. It should match the butt and the cylinder if the gun is all original.

The SN on the cylinder will be on the breech face. Do you know how to remove the cylinder from the center pin for cleaning?

The SN will be stamped in very small numbers on the rim of the cylinder between two chambers.
