Issue with 686-6 Revolver

1145 Views 28 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  deltafastback
I just purchased a new 686-6 as my 1st revolver.
I have fired 1 box of ammo thru it and noticed indentions into the cylinder. After looking I found the rear sight mounting screw protruding thru. It has put 6 deep marks
I called S & W and have received a return label for repair but they were very vague as to what they were going to do. Will they replace the cylinder or am going to have a new damaged revolver?

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! My guess is they will decide it is cosmetic and may just polish the marks out. It's not a manufacturing defect. You could eliminate the issue by shortening the screw until it is flush with the bottom of the top strap.
Hard to say. Over a period of many years, I have occasionally had to send a gun back to S&W to have a problem addressed. When the gun was returned, very little information was included about what specific repair/s were made. But, They did take care of the issue. I've received very good customer service from S&W and Ruger. Some other manufacturers, not so much..
I see a turn line. What am I missing folks? This is a new gun? What is all the other marks? Do my old eyes need fixin'? Not one of my SS Smiths have those buff marks
Somethin' doesn't add up.

That is the finish a lot of newer revolvers have. My 617 was kind of like that until I hit it with some Mothers.
Welcome to the forum!
Open the cylinder for us and take a pic of this screw you mentioned. All I’m seeing is powder marks. If something was rubbing the cylinder you’d feel it. That would be my guess.
Love my Smiths but sad to see in a new one. They gotta see it to know what to do. Preachin' to tha choir but...'final' inspection thought woulda/coulda caught it? Shame gotta polish new revolver. How'ya like to need to wax new auto when got it home. Guess just have to live with it huh?

that is the new way they look, they need buffed up with Flitz, Mothers etc.
Folks, the finish on that gun is not right from the Factory. The buff lines at left angled degrees on the cylinder, the yoke and the body/edge just above the trigger. Nope...
Someone has been monkeyin' with it with a power wire brush or a course wheel. I know my good finishes...remember, I advise buyers in high dollar vintage Porsches.
If I'm wrong then I'll eat my words. But I ain't.

Thanks for your responses. I purchased this gun as new but after having someone else look it over we highly suspect it is a used gun.

At about 30 to 40 thousandts back from the FRONT of the cylinder, I see where it has been smacking the screw protruding through the top strap durjng firing. I hope you have a receipt from a dealer saying "NEW". If you do, photocopy it and guard the original. That is the roughest "NEW" 686 I've ever seen.
Crazy part is the gun arrived this way from distributor , ordered thru brother in law with FFL. I've been trying to buy one for months but they were out of stock. One appeared in stock last week and this arrived. Would the serial # DYP4769 indicate if this is actually new production?

Thanks everyone for the help!!
Remind me to keep my 686-5 forEVER!

There are a few things here to unpack, so to speak. First of, if you have the box, and with the correct label, then there is a code on that label which represents the Julian version of the ship date, give or take a few days.

As other people have said above, this gun has obvious cleaning marks. I saw one that was shipped a year or two ago, and the fit and finish was actually very nice.

That forward leaf screw should not protrude into the frame cylinder window like that. I am guessing it might have worked loose, got lost, and replaced with the wrong one.

the screw has definately been tampered with, when you run your finger over the flat head its feels rough where someone used wrong size screwdriver

041823 should represent the date in MMDDYY format, April 18 2023.

edit: I was wrong to call it the Julian date, that is a different version (sorry)
