If it doesn't have Mod 10 wrote inside of the crane area it's probably a pre-model 10 made in the mid fifties.

Otherwise known as Military & Police Model (re-named Model 10 after 1957). W/ a serial # (x out last 2 digits for security) we can come closer w/ a ship date.

Is there actually a SW prefix on the serial #?

Yes that is the first two letters before the serial
That is not a legitimate S&W serial for this model. If you read that from the bottom of the butt, the original serial has been altered or changed, which would not be good.

As mentioned above, the hammer shape and four-line trademark stamp make this a 1948-or-later M&P.

Unless there is MOD 10 stamped in the yoke cut when you swing out the cylinder, the gun must have a serial starting with a single letter prefix, either an S and six digits (less likely) or a C and up to six digits (most likely).

What number is on the rear of the cylinder and underside of the barrel? These while lacking "legal" status should also be the official serial number. Although the focus is wanting, it strikes me the gun has been buffed and refinished, and the grips varnished?

As has been pointed out the letters SW and the six digits reported will not work. There were a few S series with these characteristics but in the 900,000 number range. C 120407 would fit the physical characteristics we see.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but it is important to note that it has been refinished just in case the OP is considering purchasing it - as opposed to already owning it.

The evidence of the refinish is that the flat surface is wavy and the side seam is really easy to see - both of these result from being over polished prior to refinishing. Also the hammer & trigger have both been blued - they should be case-colored. The grips have also been varnished.
