I've had my four inch 28-2 (N-85xxx) a L-O-N-G time, and felt it needed zero to be better but I always lusted after the longer 6" barrel.

Whether it's anecdotal on my part or common knowledge, every .357 revolver I've owned with multiple barrel lengths (even the Ruger Security six) in the same model the 4" barrels were always the most accurate, best balanced and comfortable to shoot. Magic in the air :)

It's not that the 4" gun itself is more accurate, it's that you can shoot it more accurately. It's the same for me as well.

Gnappi, you've kept your HP in great shape! I agree that the 4" N-frames are great shooters, but my all-time favorite is a 5" 27 that balances a little better, at least in my hands. I too would like a 6" HP, but for now, this is my only one. Shipped in 1954, the first year of production.

That is something I have not heard. Do you recall where you read that? 4” and 6” were standard and not deviated from to the best of my knowledge.

The HP was built as an economy revolver so the only options were stocks, and maybe triggers and hammers.

There were a very few finished in nickel, two batches if I recall, one for the sales dept and one for the Florida State Police.

In the current SCSW, there is a note about "less than 100 manufactured with an 8-3/8" barrel" (pg 230).

S&W catalogs specifically mention target grips as an option, and there are 5-lug boxes, one in this thread.

Target triggers and hammers were available, although I do not know if those were .500 width like on other N-frames during the same period.

A little more eye candy... An M28 4" and an M28-2. I don't have completely correct grips for either one of these, but at least those magnas are about the correct age for a Model 28 s/n S190xxx, around 1958~59 (I think). I recently found a .500 wide set of hammer and trigger for the 6" version, but have not tried installing them yet.

I had both 4" and 6". Gave the 4" to my Son as a Christmas present. Sent the 6" to Dave Chicoine, who cut the barrel to 5", and re-installed the front sight so it looks original. Missed the 4" I gave to my Son so I bought another 4" a while back.
