Help to all. I've been looking around online and haven't had much luck finding a serial number list. While I'm sure it's it there a lot of links came back here so here goes.

It's a S&W 38 specially ctg
Mod 10-6
Serial C643181

My dad said it was his grandfather's when he was a police constable, but he wasn't completely with it in the end... I was just trying to find date of manufacture really. And any other interesting tid-bits I guess. Any help would be much appreciated.

I agree with Forester. I have a 10-4, s/n C602xxx, that shipped 1/1963.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! What a nice heirloom! The S&W .38 Military & Police revolver has been a classic sidearm for police, military and security personnel for 122 years now. It is the most produced handgun in history with around 7 million made since 1899. I hope you shoot it frequently in remembrance of your dad and great-grandfather.
