I was wondering what the heaviest load I can safely shoot out of my 66-1 with 4" barrel. For example would Federal's 180 hardcast loads work. I also want to preface that I dont plan on shooting heavy loads on a regular basis, but more of a just in case a bear or mountain lion wants to eat me preventive.

I would have a hard time believing any reputable company would put out a product that would harm a model the cartridge was designed for.
Federal's 180 gr offering is going less than 1,100 FPS, I loaded some 180s with the minimum powder charge listed for my choice of powder and they average better than 1,100 FPS out of a 6" barrel.
I would not feed any of my revolvers a steady diet of them, not for the gun' sake, for mine. 158 cast bullets clicking along at about that same speed are alot of fun.
If you want bear protection, the 180 would be fine, but I think most of us here would recommend a slow buddy go with you. Have him carry the beer,,, and John's "Lucky Ham" (that still cracks me up :D)

Wow thanks for everyone's input. I like Azmick's suggestion best! If I can come across any of the mentioned loads I'll be sure to give them a try. I like my revolver to much to shoot that stuff on a regular basis, but every once in awhile should be fun.
