I have a 686 with no dash but it has an "M" stamped above the model number. It has a serial number of ABD00XX.

Can anyone give me the date of manufacture?

Also, about how old would a 642-1 be? (don't have the serial number readily available)

Thanks!!!

your 686 is the first incarnation of them and it looks pretty early by the SN! The "M" stamp means it went back to S&W for the hammer nose bushing rework. I have a 586 that has the M also.

I can't help much on the 642 sorry I don't have my S&W catalog handy.

Good guns.

The 686 is/was a Missouri State Hwy Patrol gun and has the MSHP logo/crest stamped on the right side and the trooper's badge number stamped on left side of frame below the cylinder.

It's in good shape considering but has some "character" and has a ding on rear sight so I'm sure it's been dropped.

It shoots good and the action is very smooth.

The 686 dates to late 1982. Nice find with patrol history.

The 642-1 was made from 1996 to 2002.
