I get guys who want to buy one of my one of my Smith's, then, after a while say they don't have the money anymore. This has happened far too often......and I am fed up with it! If you want to buy a gun, you should have the money to buy it. No excuses, to delay, or change the deal. SO, after the last one.....I'm not going to sell anything anymore!!!!

If you want to collect Smith's or Colt's, you should be able to afford them, in the first place. NO if's, and's, or but's!!!!

Bob, this is why I typically have sold my firearms on consignment through a dealer I know well.

I don't even have to know the individuals that have been buying the firearms, and always receive the cash or check in a timely manner once it sells. My dealer consigns for a 15% fee, which is reasonable.

That said... "wants", "needs" and "what's possible" are often far out of balance in today's world.

We also sell through consignment at our LGS. They ask you how much you want, and if it seems a bit high they question you on how you came to the price. They don't want stuff sitting for years that won't sell because it is not the gold it is priced like! They add 10% to the amount you want.

If they happen to get an offer for a lower amount they will call you and ask you if you want to take that deal or not.

They just sold a Kimber Micro .380 Raptor model for me that I wasn't sure would ever sell. I priced it at the highest competitive price because it was an expensive gun and I included a lot of extras. Several weeks went by and I got "the phone call" to come and get my money. Of course I didn't get all the money I had spent, but I got a fair price for a barely used gun plus extras.

Every gun I've sold has been through local/state classifieds. Have never had an issue with non payment. I meet them at an agreeable LGS for transfer and the deed is done.

Kurt, I have also done such a deal FTF with a resident of Mass. It is simple to do, but you have to file a transfer within the state. They have the form available on-line. If they won't transfer the ownership........they don't get the gun. There are some sleasy people out there......but I'm not one of them!!! ;) Bob

I have never sold on consignment. I have sold firearms outright to an LGS when offered a price I considered fair.

I have also sold firearms to close friends and training partners. That is legal in IL with an online ISP approval of buyer. I don't often sell firearms and have never offered one for sale to a stranger, casual acquaintance or 'guy I met at the range'. I have occasionally waited a specified time for payment but have never had anyone back out of a deal. I have often bought on an auction sight but have never sold that way.

Once I sold a handgun to a training partner in order to purchase one offered for sale by another friend. He used my money to make the final payment on a new handgun. Everybody upgraded and everybody was happy. The next week at the range I thought of an old joke: The eldest son of a large family comes home with his brand new driver's license and announces to his younger brothers "Hey, everybody move up one bike!"

Tire kickers, they are prevalent in the gun world. They will always be around. My favorites are the ones with alternate excuses, "I'd buy it if it had a two inch barrel", "or if it was a DASH 3 I'd be all over it". Favorite one is a completely different gun. For Sale, insert favorite S&W, "If that was a Glock 19, I would have done bought it".

I'm sorry too that many of you have silly state gun laws to deal with.

I bought my 9mm Springfield M1911a1 pistol from a friend at the range that was very motivated to by another brand of M1911a1... About six months later, lamenting his sale to me, he asked if he could buy it back... I still have the very excellent pistol he sold me.

I'm probably the guy Bob is upset about. I'm sorry Bob. In my defense, I did request, up front, a blued Model 15.

Local trading paper is what I have used. State doesn't require anything ID-wise for a face-to-face and cash is king.

I always just went to a guy's house or had him come to my house. One guy invited me inside and we talked a long time. He did have another guy there....odd "MS 12" or something tattoos on their necks but very nice guys to deal with. (Just kidding. Guy was in the wheelchair and his buddy was clearly taking care of him).

Many people ONLY buy this way for obvious reasons and not because they are felons.

It is ,what it is. That's one of the 'excuses' I talked about. If you are willing to have your name come up, when the Police run the serial number, that's fine with me. I don't, so I insist on doing the transfer. It's not required in Mass. either. But, I don't want my name on a gun used in a crime. Bob

The one thing I never do when selling a long arm is to have the buyer come to my house. It's just a precautionary thing. When it comes to firearms, the less a stranger knows about me, the better. I'll meet them at my pistol club which is just up the street.
Handgun transactions always go down at an FFL as a background check required by law in Pa. Road trip meetups for long guns, whether buying or selling, seem to always happen at the handiest Wall Mart parking lot, if not outside a gun shop.
I haven't been stood up for any transaction and many times the trip was well over 100 miles. Most all the people I've dealt with have been nice and we've often spent quite some time talking about our mutual hobby.
There have been a few instances where I've declined an offer to buy or sell simply because the communications didn't feel right, but only a few.

I have sold several firearns thru consignment at a loal LGS. The twenty percent is reasonable, however I never know if the dealer sold any of them for more than the computed asking price. That is, If I think a pistol is worth $500 and agree to accept $400, the dealer does not tell me if it received more than $500.

Can't you go back and see the price tag on your gun while it is in their used guns counter?

I always keep my guns spotless. I have seen many dirty guns at the LGS. If you want something, why would you bother leading someone else on, for something you don't want, GTLO? This type of behavior pisses me off!!!! Bob

I don't like selling anything. The last thing I sold was a UTV I didn't use. Nothing burns my butt more than the first words out of their mouth is "what's your lowest price", not ask about its features, when they can see it, etc. Just, "how little will you take." I get so enraged I just hang up on them!
