I remember when filler pipes were behind the rear license plate, there was no self serve and it was cash only. The gas jockey also washed the windshield, checked the oil and the water level in the battery and air was free and at the pump. It was called a service station
Oh, I remember this too, pulling the license plate down to take the gas cap off. A true two handed operation. I also remember my dad owning a '69 Pontiac station wagon, and telling them to "fill it up with ethyl". Later, you also had the choice of leaded or unleaded.
