I wonder what incarcerating all those non-compliant current taxpayers will end up costing New Zealand? The ones that won't be paying taxes anymore, and that will be costing lots of resources to house, feed, guard and prosecute?

What a government great program... so well thought through, equitable, fair and ultimately dangerous.

It's so interesting to see what happens when a psychopath successfully manipulates a democratic republic. This was one of his stated objectives in his manifest of a sick mind.

Well, it's the results you get with a government that is too reactive to the passions of the moment. The Founders were smart to insulate one house from the vagaries of the mob. Too bad we've lost that.

“If people don’t hand in the other prohibited firearms and parts by 20 December they will get no money and will face up to five years in prison and the loss of their firearms license,” he added.

Eh... pretty weak.

In America, if any of the 500,000 bump stock owners haven't turned in or otherwise destroyed it they face up to 10 years in prison.

20%+m of NZ households own guns. With some coordinated effort, all 20% of the population should show up at police headquarters demanding to be arrested, tried, etc. The cost would be astronomical.
Secondly, NZ spending 200 million they don't have that could be put to better use is the real crime here.

Let's see... 500,000 productive citizens earning an average of $60,000 a year comes to $30,000,000,000 ($30 Billion) with 25% taxes running $6 Billion each year of lost government income.

One year of Federal prison incarceration costs $35,000 each so that's an additional $17,500,000,000 ($17.5 Billion) each year for incarceration.

Each of those families now represents 2.3 people going onto welfare assistance, medicaid and public housing assistance. The current $1.5 trillion dollar cost is so diffuse the detailed costs can't be calculated, but adding another 1.6 million people should expand it. There are 52 million people on welfare assistance programs now. This will add another 2 percent or $30,000,000,000 ($30 Billion).

It's the progressive latte liberal dream. Get all those problem causing bump stocks off the street, and add another $53.5 Billion in Federal expenses and transfer payments for the rest of us to cover. And all for something that won't actually interfere with a single violent crime. It will just make frightened people "feel safer".

Now... what about those 300,000,000 firearms that Americans own today?

Yes, but you can't just list the cost side the the ledger without including the benefit of all the appeasement good will purchased.
