hi all and thanks for letting me join, and I look forward to some good reading and discussion. Can someone help with a date on my 37 no dash serial # 864J44. anything would great

1971 - 72 - its whats called a floating J serial number, unique to this timeframe..

It was just a way to provide unique serial numbers for these guns. When they ran out of numbers in a sequence they just added a number in front of the "J" model designation. They shipped these guns well into the mid 70s. BTW S&W uses the ship date to "date" their guns. At times there can be decades of time between manufacture and shipping.

thanks a lot. its my first J frame, I have a couple K frames. Really looking forward shooting the little thing.

Welcome to the forum. I am also the proud owner of a "floating J". It is a Model 36 Chiefs Special. Shipped in 3/74. Great little J frame.
