I shot this photo in 2009. He was in a rehab facility because he lost an eye and had a bad wing and other injuries. His look of defiance struck me. He reminded me of Samuel Whittemore, the oldest known combatant at the battles of Lexington and Concord. He was in his 70s. Shot at least 3 retreating British Regulars from the side of the road before a detachment was sent to get him. Old Sam was shot in the face and bayoneted multiple times and left for dead. His neighbors found him still breathing and took him to a doctor. The doctor didn't think he'd survive the night. He lost a lot of blood. He survived to the age of 96. I gotta believe old Sam had a look about him like this guy.
