OK, Kinda a advanced S&W collectors quiz. A gun that is oddball and I needed to make some decisions in buying. Say $800 cash and you need to decide right now.... ;)

The gun is a Non-Model marked 4" Four Screw. It is a .44 Magnum. I'm going to give you all the clues in the two pictures that I present that should tell the tale.

Deal, or No Deal....and Why....?????

Can't really differentiate the reflection from what might be surface scratches, but I do note that it's been factory-refinished.
The diamond might indicate a replaced part or just a reiteration of the factory refinish 'B'.
Looks like an overstrike on the serial number, but that's not as uncommon as you'd think.
The grips look pretty darn good....not correct, but it's a shooter, right?
More-detailed photos would help.
Original finish?
Original condition?
Probably $ 1,500 and up, for that barrel-length.
Don

1. The stocks suck.

2. You've been rubbin' it on them damned rocks again!

3. You've been shootin' yore reloads in it. God only knows when it'll blow to Hell and gone.

4. It has some stupid looking diamond stamped on the ass-end of the cylinder.

No, I ain't gonna buy it.

I'm in over my head, not the first time though; is the hammer right for the gun? It's hard to tell from the picture.....

P&R for those that care.....

I'm holding my $800 and squeezing for a better deal....

I'm a shooter not a collector....

I got stuff this length...and it ain't that desirable for *my* kinda bucks-on-the-table deal.

I been wrong before and still survived.

I probably wouldn't go for $800. The mixed headstamps was the straw that broke the deal for me.

You've all missed the extractor rod.... ;) Wrong direction, kid's...

And yet your looking at a rear face of a cylinder that says so much....

I might have to do another next week to add to your edification....

Bring it sonny.....

Better yet, spend a little time on the loading bench learning how not to crush your primers.

John,

Actually I was thinking of making it a harder test...next time :p

The gun in the picture is original finish and stocks are neat but not correct. The cylinder has been replaced with one in the modern thread direction. Still for $800 it is a heck of a nice shooter.... ;)

Giz, if you didn't deal for it I'll come lookin for you myself. Very early production, I'd say maybe 'first year'?
