BNS 2158

I asked the gun dealer if I could shoot 38 plus P and even though my gun isn't marked as such, he put a magnet on the cylinder and it stuck. Indicating it was steel, he said yes.
Thoughts?

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You didn't ask, but if BNS2158 is your 442's serial number, it was made in 1992/93. The +P question gets asked a lot. You might want to read this thread.

I believe that S&W says all model marked revolvers will handle plus P ammo, but the dealers method of determining that is bogus. All that tells is that the cylinder is steel. No way that tells what kind of steel and how it was heat treated
