S&W with no model number. Serial number 139658 .357. What can anyone tell me about it? Thanks!!
There should be a letter in front of the serial number, which is part of the serial number. S&W makes more than 1 model in 357 magnum. With no model stamping it is most likely a pre27 or pre19 but no way to tell without the full serial number or pictures

Looks like someone added the N on the stamping inside the shroud. The N is a thinner font. The serial number is S139658. That makes it an N frame, model 357 made in 1954-55. In 1958 when S&W started stamping model numbers it would the model 27. Can't tell much else about it since pictures are only of part of the gun. How long is the barrel? What grips are on it? Is the finish original? With well lighted photos of both sides of the complete gun we can probably tell you more.

Is that N for nickel finish? If it is, there may be a corresponding N on the edge of the cylinder and on the left side of the frame. What is stamped on the right side of the barrel, along with the s/n, will tell you what it is exactly.

I've been told that my S113xxx was made in July of 1954, so S139xxx likely shipped in 1955.

Never saw an N for nickel within the serial number

I have not seen one either, but the SCSW does mention N stamped within the shroud (I have not seen an example). That was why I wanted to know if it was stamped somewhere else too, because I have seen it in the other places.

Does anyone have a post-war nickel .357 N-frame to compare?

The N is for nickel plate and I have seen them between the letter and numbers before. It's not common. There should be one on the rear face of the cylinder, maybe under the extractor star, and on the left side (sometimes right) of the grip frame.
