You know, I'm really surprised.

If some of you don't want to change your password, that's fine. Don't do it.

However, you're walking away from the best forum on the net over a very small deal. Your call though..
That is my take as well. I just marvel at how many threads we have had here about how much better members here think this forum is compared to others. We have or don't have:

Fine members who provide entertainment and information.

Rarely are there serious infractions here between the members that require staff attention and then typically a gentle reminder gets things back on course.

Anybody asks a question here whether they are newer or have been here a while they receive a polite and informative answer without the attitude you might get from those thinking they are the grand old man of the forum. Example, is it safe to shoot .38 + P in .357 with the questioner feeling like they are a fool for asking.

No heavy handed or nitpicking staff over practically every post or thread. Things have to be over the top on content or language before I get involved. As noted, how many threads have we seen where someone here complains with the comment "over on the ________ forum, I got an infraction for or was suspended for..." while here it is very rare.

All in all it has me scratching my head about the complaints in having to change your password, then in a year change it again.

Hey Wendy,

Good points.

On the password "thingy". Why? (am a "confuser ignoramus" and did not "understand" the "why")

And no, am not planning on leaving :bluelogo: if I need to change the password. (may take me a while to figure out how to so do) LOL

Later, Mark

This was the reason given by the administration here:

"We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community."

Having seen only positive from the new owners/admins after the forum was bought I have no reason to doubt their intention.

I guess I'm just a little slow but I'm curious to know just what exactly is this threat and how will changing my password help? I don't really mind changing my password really since it's just not that hard. But I'd still like to know what this threat is we're now aware of? I guess I just don't know how that would work and what super secret stuff someone would find if they did somehow guess my password?

It is above my pay grade and tech knowledge, but some I trust more on computers and the internet have told me that unless you have NO connection at all to the internet, no RJ45 hookup, no wireless connection your PC can be gotten too from outside sources regardless of antivirus, firewalls, that all of those can be defeated.

Yes indeed Wendy........I agree that those are all good points that you and Carl both point out.

As I said in my original post on this string (about this subject), I have no desire and/or intent to be "argumentative" or to convince anyone of anything.........so please don't misunderstand my feelings and verbal candor. I thought I was being quite careful with my words and possibly even verbose to make my feelings clear.......however, maybe I was being too careful with my words and my point became missed.

Indeed, the issue with the password is a very small thing and taken by itself, it's really not sufficiently offensive to make me consider no longer being a member of this fine forum........which BTW, I truly agree is comprised of a fine bunch of folks that I call and consider "friends".

The issue I have is with being told what I "MUST" do to continue being a member.

I have been told and dictated to by corporate, government and business policy setters for many many years...........that I "MUST" do this and that.........I must not do this and that........all so I was able to participate and continue doing what I did. Believe me, it was very draconian and capricious yet understandable..........and I always complied (I was a "good troop").

Now-a-days I'm retired and I no longer have to subject myself to an environment such as that and allow myself to be dictated to by policy makers/setters..........I get to enjoy doing what I "WANT" to do and do not have to do what some policy setter dictates that I "MUST" do.................simple as that. Up until now I've enjoyed doing what I've "wanted" to do here on this forum and here-to-fore, nobody had told me what I "MUST" do..............and here it is, a simple thing that I "MUST" do...............Guess I really don't understand why either, other than a policy setter says so.

Guess what? "I'm the boss of me".............

Ya know, the truth be told.........I'll probably do it. I'll do it because I think so highly of all you folks and I'd miss the interaction................................However, I don't like it........I'm not happy about it.........and I'm disgruntled.

Now, I've become poised to see what else may come down the barrel.............Oh I'm sure, just a small thing.

BTW, "We The People" should be the primary consideration of the Government of this country (The U.S.A).......but somehow the politicians/legislators/bureaucrats have become the primary consideration and additionally we seem to be creeping toward socialism. It seems to me that this forum is only as good as it's members............advertisers would not pay to advertise on a non active website with no visitors.

My intentions are not to be offensive (with my words, feelings or opinions) ..............I'm just trying to explain because it was said that it was not understood. Maybe it is understood now.

Best Regards My Friends and Forum Family,

Geezer

That sums it up for me. I've stayed out of this fray because I was conflicted about the situation. This nailed it for me. Thanks Geezer!

Seems to me the issue is "someone may guess your password, which is likely the same as or a close kin to other passwords you use, therefore you should change this one to avoid compromising the other ones".

What if I don't give a flip? What if this password bears no semblance to any of my other passwords? What if I don't have anything in or around the internet that would damage me if someone did figure out my password? I mean so what if someone hacks my Facebook account? It'd likely be a lot more interesting than the current stuff I post!

Why is it mandatory? Why not "the problem is 'x' and if 'x' looks like anything else in your life you value, like bank accounts or 401k accounts, please do the smart thing and change your password. Here are some useful tips: zzz, hhh and yyyy. Thanks"!

It happens on every forum, whether it is about passwords, content or language. More than once I have seen some article, post or thread where my first thought was to post my first thought even if the filters here didn't block it I would not. No, not a lot of carnal verbs from me even though I do use them at times, more of references to excrement about more than a few politicians, media types, celebrities and others.

Because the owners decided it. They pay the bills, they make the rules. It is their property. It is no different from you making the rules in your house. You own it and pay to keep it up, you call the shots. I see complaints, but I do not see those complaining offering to take up and pay up for keeping things up, spending their time and effort and running it. I doubt it can be put any plainer than that.

Exactly!
This is a no-cost-to-you situation and if you just can't do what the new owners want, then fine. But grumbling about it is not going to change their minds.

I'm just miffed because they outed me and my "flluffy" password. :( Now I have to change by dog's name...again. He was ok with 12345 but preferred 'fluffy.' Now he doesn't come when I call him 9H!d3a4x. (That's Phideaux for those of you who do not speak passwordeese.) Dang it!!

O.K. folks. No sense in continuing to kick a dead horse. Ruck-up and move out. Get-r-done. I have changed my password to something so long & so glorious I had to write it down on a sticky & attach to my computer screen. It is so long & so good with numbers, letters, and symbols that I'm on my second cup of coffee before I am allowed to enter the forum. The hacker from India will never figure this one out. It's probably longer and better than Obama's nuke launch code. No one, not even Russian code breakers will be able to crack it. It's even better than "Fluffy"......ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.....

I changed mine too. The issue was I had a perfect password and now it is gone. There will never be another like it. It did no one any harm yet now it is gone.

Please use a password unique to this community.
Here is mine: gv~lr`/'JB3r*US!^Tq%$Cd"2po$qL!*[7;2s?Mb]bC|[email protected]@L8~]/c

Created at: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

Think the hackers can crack it? It's not really mine, but the website above can create great passwords. I make no effort to remember passwords except my master password on LastPass. The runway of life is too short to cope with ID theft and etc.

You know you can change your password at any time. Just change it to please the new requirement then in a few days change it back to your 'perfect' password. Just a suggestion...

Don't tell anyone but that was my plan. Some programs will catch a recent password and reject. And the new password is not bad so who knows???
