Surprising my husband with a new SD9. Just realized I bought 9mm fmj ruger bullets for it. Are those okay, or should I get a different kind?

Welcome to the forum.
I'm sure that you meant 9mm Luger, correct? If yes, you're good to go.

Welcome to the forum.

"Ruger" is a gun manufacturer.

"Luger" is a type of pistol named after designer Georg Luger. The 9mm Luger round (also known by other names) was designed for it in 1902. It's a most popular round, and used widely today in a number of pistols.

Please consider taking a NRA Basic Pistol class with your spouse. You'll learn safety, and likely have an instructor that can help you shoot more accurately, and enjoy your new purchase more.

Besides, it is fun to get out to the range!

As long as both the gun and ammo are 9mm you are fine. There are are couple names 9mm goes by. It can be called 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, or 9x19mm. What you have is correct
