I just bought a used 686 the other day. I have a question. It is labeled a 686-6. What does the last 6 represent? Also when you open the cylinder I see three numbers stamped on the arm the cylinder is on. 927 are the numbers on it. What does that mean? Thanks for the help folks.

The dash six is a desighn change from the dash 5.Smith and wesson adds dash numbers to a original model to signify some change they have made. The thing the cylinder is on is called a crane. I am not sure but the number you see there is a production stamp. Others more familiar with a 686 can tell you.I am not familiar with the changes in the 686 but I think yours is a lock version and the last dash number probably refers to the lock being added.

The numbers you're referring to are assembly numbers. They were used when your revolver was being assembled at the factory.

For us, they have no practical use.

Nice choice of a revolver, by the way..

After trying a box full of uncomfortable holsters for my Glock 21 I finally found the Fobus paddle holster. Easy on and off, and really comfortable. So I went ahead and got one for my K-frames (10, 19, 66). I also got one for my J-frame, but never use it because I just carry that one in my pocket.

Comfortable and secure. That's what sold me.

If you want leather at a reasonable price, Lobo Gun Leather is hard to beat.

Fist Holsters are a tad higher, but a bigger selection.

Simply Rugged makes a great pancake holster, and his prices are pretty good, too.

Good luck. Great choice with the 686.
This page helps with many model changes, but unfortunately, not yours. Keep it for a reference.
