38 Special Wadcutters

I have not loaded any 38 specials since back in March, and was getting pretty low. Was about 90 degrees out so an hour in the cool basement listening to Tom Petty and loading ammo seemed a good idea.
These use a 148gr Speer Hollow Base Wadcutter and 3gr of Titegroup

I have been really busy and this was actually the first of anything I have loaded in a couple months. Pretty low on 357, so that will be next, after another couple hundred 38’s

I use Hornady soft swaged HBWC; have loaded them both ways (hollow base up and down) as well as loaded with a regular 38 load of TG or Bullseye seated at SWC OAL - lots of fun. I used to use Western NV/West Coast (they became Xtreme) DEBBWC, and those were harder; not bad accuracy-wise, but i find the softer ones seem to do a little better.

Are those Speers soft or a harder cast?

BTW, I buy TG and Bullseye in 4# jugs, lasts a lot longer

I use the same recipe with a Lead DEWC foe 38 Special and use a Berrys Plated DEWC over 8 grains Unique for 357 Mag and is very accurate out of my 28-2 at 80 yards. Those look like the perfect way keep cool.

They are a soft swaged bullet, much like the Hornady bullets. An area shop sells these for $35.95/500. The Hornady 148gr HBWC are $24.95/250.

I used to crank out 38 S&W Specials by the bucket full when I was competing in PPC. I used a Dillon 450 and could load for hours. I loaded 2.8 of Bullseye under the hbwc (from National Bullet Company when they were in business) and sparked it with whatever primer I had available. Eventually I found that my cast dewc 150 grain bullets were sufficient not only for practice but competition. I loaded them by the 5 gallon pail. Accurate enough to keep me in the top of my classification.

I love shooting full wadcutters in 38 special. I use Win-231 and I can get a single tight hole at 10 yards. I'm using Matts Bullets 157 gr. WC.

Federal markets a hollow point 130 grain plated wadcutter but as yeat I have been unable to locate any bullets, or loaded ammo. At least I have plenty of lead.

I loaded almost the exact same thing today!
The only difference is I was loading the same bullet over 3 gr of HP-38.
Why so light? Because I was loading them for this old Colt New Army/Navy 38DA chambered for 38 Long Colt.

The soft HB wadcutters will obturate to the bore nicely and by loading them deep in the case I can get away with using regular 38 special cases instead of the shorter 38 Long Colt cases.

I shot a bunch of full wadcutters yesterday in a 900 bullseye match, Model 52-1. Keep up the good work Jonsey.
