Any experience/advice on gold dot gdhp 158gr in 357 mag loads? was hoping to use 2400 or blue dot. i've seen the propaganda on the factory loads for personal protection but what if ,lets say, I need to protect myself from a north eastern p.a. whitetail?

IMOH - 2 shots into the chest cavity of a deer with the 158 gr. Gold Dots, and more than likely it's going down, right now.
The Gold Dots expand unforgivingly into soft tissue and will shread the internal organs of the deer you hit. If it hits bone solidly it will fragment, and the blood loss from the extra tissue damage is substantial. The second shot is terminal if you need to use it.
One .357 shot to the skull and the deer will drop where it stood, no questions asked. If it can kill a bear a deer is no a problem either.
The 2 legged kind--- You need to lay it into central mass, same results unless the person is hyped up on adrenelin or drugs and then as they say -- No ammo is guaranteed to put down terminally, every time.
There is no guarantee that what you shoot will stop under every circumstance
