3" barrel model 10

Hello everyone. This is my first time on this forum. I have a 3" barrel S&W model 10 revolver. It was manufactured for the Turkish Police in I believe in the late 70s or early 80s. As most of you know, S&W never made a model 10 in a 3 " barrel. I cannot find ANYTHING about this piece on the web ANYWHERE! It's been very frustrating. I hope someone can help me with any info on this gun. I inherited it from my dad. He once told me it's an overrun from a Turkish contract with S&W, and only a few were ever sold in the U.S. It's never been fired and it's still in the original box! I'm sure it's valuable since S&W never made a 3 " barrel model 10, and no S&W collection can be complete without one. Please, if anyone can help, please let me know. Thank You, Matt S.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Matt, you need to post pictures of the gun from all sides and the box. Also, we need the serial number from the butt of the gun.

From the Standard Catalog of S&W, 4th Edition:

• Turkish National Police: Model 10-9, 3” barrel, square butt, narrow white stripe on the ramp front sight, two small white dots on the rear sight , these sights were at the specific request of the T.N.P., marked “T.C. POLIS” on the left side of the frame, BFR serial prefix, Plain Clothes Grips, 1250 manufactured, 88 were shipped to AccSport in the USA and were the only sales in the US, reported as the product overrun. Product Code: 100134 1991.

(Page 206).

Your gun shipped in 1991. It is also a rare example of a limited production model that is ANIB. There is no way to estimate the value which will have to be set by the market through auction. In fact, deep pocket collectors may already be contacting you to buy it. Good luck fending them off!

Thank You very much for that tip. Just a note on this piece. Like I said in my first post, it is in un-fired condition, well stored and in the original box. If there are any deep pocket collectors out there, I might be tempted to part with it (for the right price). Of course, I must be given time to research what the right price is. This beauty has been in my gun safe since my dad passed in 1999, and I'm not getting any younger myself! Please don't hesitate to contact me through this forum or directly through Email. Again, Thank You for that good news. Matt...…[email protected]..........p.s. Anyone wishing to contact me about this piece would get faster response through Email.
Hi and welcome to the forum! Please post some pics of the Model 10 you describe. We'd love to see it.
If you are serious about marketing this gun, you are going to need some professional level photos to send to prospective buyers. Might as well start with some photos here. When you post them, post a picture of the label on the box. Also, you should buy a S&W historian's letter of authenticity for $100 from the S&W Historical Foundation. That will validate the gun as one of 88 sent to AccuSport. Lastly, you should be aware that another S&W forum exists that is also the home of the S&W Collector's Association. DON'T post over there without pictures. They are serious dudes and dudettes and will not be amused.

Just a tip on maintaining the gun's condition. Don't dry fire it or cycle the action. Turning the cylinder creates a larger turn line. A pristine ANIB revolver has no or very little turn line. Condition is everything for top dollar and the more turn line the less you'll get.

Happy Father's Day to all you guys. I will post some pics soon. My phone is in my son's car. I will get it back later today. As you can understand I'll be busy today with family. Will be back tomorrow. By the way, the condition of this piece is like new. Only a very slight and faint turn line on the cylinder. I guess my dad cycled the action once or twice. Other than that it's perfect. Until yesterday it has been untouched in my safe since April of 1999 when dad passed. It was kept wrapped in the original oil impregnated paper it left the factory in. Have a good day to all. I'm sure I will.

Also if your selling a hard lesson I’ve learned is sometimes rare or valuable guns are Not always desirable guns. I talked to a guy yesterday who could not sell a rare model 16 because the market just isn’t there for that one. He’s dropped the price from like 5000 to 3000 and still can’t sell it. Again I don’t know what channels he’s trying and I don’t know the value or the market for your gun. A 1000 doesn’t seem out of line for something like that to me and I swear I’ve seen a couple 3” model 10s before that weren’t super expensive. The guys here can give you a much better idea than I can and who knows maybe you can make big bucks but I would advise cautious optimism.

Smith and Wesson made many Model 10’s with 3” Barrels. I have several. They were made in blue and nickel. Offered as a special order in the 60’s and became regular catalog items in the 70’s IIRC. One of my favorite shooters was a special order square butt ordered for a deputy in 1961. I have a couple of RB shipped in the 70’s.

To my limited knowledge 3" tapered barrels Model 10's are invariably foreign police orders.
France, Turkey, Australia, Canada, Turkey to my recall. Mine falls within an RCMP serial range.

The closest yardstick I imagine is a Peruvian Model 10 snub times seems $1200 was the most recent go-round.
Thanks you for the input. This piece is not a tapered barrel . It has the same barrel as the piece ETruett posted. Please guys & gals, I'm hoping to post some good pics tomorrow. Again, please be patient. Please remember I have no more knowledge of my piece other than what's been said on this forum. I'm not trying to say I have anything more than discussed. Thanks. See all tomorrow. 😎

Looks in pretty good condition. Thanks for sharing the pics. I have two law enforcement turn ins...my model 360 and my 64-8. Both in decent condition and a joy to shoot. Congrats again on the 3" model 10.
Thanks a lot Curt360. I appreciate the good will. Keep shootin'.

Your gun was made on Monday, December 10, 1990. Looks to be in pretty good condition for a police revolver.

Thanks for that info Guy. Nice to know. Of course this Police revolver never saw any actual action. My dad ordered a new model 10 for home defense and this is what arrived! Pretty lucky!
